Video Production Resources

This section is intended to provide some resources for the aspiring videographer. If you have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to send mail to alex at seattlevintagejazzdance dot com.

Software

There are some videos on YouTube and help on other sites (Microsoft, Apple) to help you edit your movies files with the software listed. These are simple tutorials to give you the basics, but if you're looking for more complex effects, you can search YouTube yourself for them. Chances are they are there.

For audio editing, we recommend using Audacity, which is free and available for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

Many Windows distributions comes with Movie Maker, for editing movies that you take with your video camera. Movie Maker is simple but effective, and comes with Windows XP (SP2) and Vista.

On the Mac, we recommend using the included video-editing software (iMovie and iMovieHD) that comes with your Mac, or with iLife.

For those dabbling in animation, we recommend starting with stop-motion animation. Stop-motion animation is how claymation, LEGO movies, and South Park is done. A camera is pointed at something (clay, LEGOs, or construction-paper cutouts laying flat on a table in the case of South Park), and that something is moved (and sometimes added to) in between individual image captures. For creating stop-motion animations, we recommend using iStopMotion for the Mac ($49), and Anasazi Stop Motion for Windows (free).

For more serious animators, we recommend Toon Boom Studio for the Mac.
